Damodar Kunda Trek is an adventurous journey to a beautiful holy lake Damodar Kunda. It lies in Upper Mustang between Kagbeni and Muktinath at the height of 5,400 meters above sea-level. It is situated on the base of Damodar Himal 6706 meters. The Lake flow towards the south and is believed to be the origin of Kaligandaki River and the Shaligrams. The pilgrims also believe that touching the water of the pond will wipe out the evil spirit and bring prosperity in life.
The trail provides us enthralling experience of beauty of Mustang region and their culture. You can observe archival monasteries, snow capped mountains, isolated villages and many stunning lakes in Damodar Kunda Trekking. You can find around 65 peaks in this Himal range and Marsyangdi River that originates from this assortment. Views of peaks like Muktinath Himal 6,706 m and Bhrikuti Peak 6,364 m, will leave you stunned. You can explore typical culture on Chharang village. The view from the top of the Damodar Kunda Lake is also very magnificent. Due to the religious and historical value of the Damodar Kunda Lake, a grand annual festival is celebrated in August. The full moon of August is the momentous day in Damodar Kunda because there is a huge festival celebrated joyfully on this day every year.
Damodar kunda is very interesting. According to the local inhabitants of mustang, it goes back to 8th century when people tried to build the Samya Gompa in Tibet. But the demons destroyed it every time. The village was very troubled by it. In the mean time, the lamas of the village dreamt of Guru Padma Sambhawa solving the problem and decided to invite Guru in their village for a solution. Guru Padma Sambhawa accepted the invitation and travelled to Tibet. He crossed many regions defeating the demons on the way with his magical power.
When he reached the place (where Samya Gompa was to be constructed), he realized that the magical power with the demons was the reason behind the destruction. Then the Guru suggested the villagers that to successfully construct Samya Gompa in Tibet, they should first build the Lo-Ghyakar Gompa in Mustang. He killed the demon on his way back to Lo-Tshu Dhyun (Upper Mustang) where the Lo-Ghyekar Gompa is now situated. It is also believed that the long Mhane wall which is located in Ghemi along the trail was built from the demon’s intestine and the red cliff near Dhakmar is the blood of the demon which was spread during the battle
Another interesting place that you can witness in this trekking is Lo-Ghyekar Gompa. It is an ancient monastery built in 8th century. The gompa/ monastery lies at an altitude of 3934 meters. This monastery is older than “Samya Gompa” in Tibet. Lo- Ghyekar was built during the time of King-Dhuisung Dhenchen, Kempo-Khenjen Siwachho and Minister- Ghahwi Wangju. It is famous for the carved drawings and paintings in slates and the art is exemplary.

United States, 20th September, 2016Mustang: Damodar Kunda trek
We chose, again HMT for this trip, because our last treks with this agency went beautifully. After a night in Pokara, we took the plane towards Jomson, and from there, we left on foot in the direction of Kagbeni, gateway to the kingdom of Mustang. Our team consisted of the Sitaram guide, the best of the Himalayas! and two porters, Prakash, (iron man) and shamboo with a broad smile. We progressed slowly up Mustang, through Samar, Gheling, Ghami, Tsarang, towards Lo Mantang the capital of the Kingdom. Thanks to Sitaram, we had the chance to visit some caves that serve as hermitage for some Lama, something that would have been impossible to do without him, thank you again a thousand times for his very professional services! The Mustang paths are quite different from those of the classic Nepal treks. Fewer tourists, high altitude in general, drier, dusty, filled with silence and spirituality. Villages like Yara, Tsarang, allow you to discover many ancient temples, several centuries old and still in perfect condition, filled with wonderful paintings and exceptional murals, we were lucky to be able to visit many, thanks to Sitaram, something impossible without him, I thank him again warmly! Then we arrived at Lo Mangtang, a true medieval gem, in the heart of a high plateau at 3800 meters, where we stayed for two days for acclimatization. We visited former cave hermitages, but this time without the monks. Then, we left, under the snow, towards Yara, famous for its high perched hermitages, to get closer to our highest destination, the Damodar Kunda at 5400 meters. After finding the sun, we made a first camp around 4800 meters, because the long climb to the Damodar Kunda represents a walk, round trip of more than 6 hours. The climb is very gradual, but the altitude is quickly felt, and the steps become more and more slow. But what a delight to be at the top, and to see, in the distance the Annapurna chain and also the Dhaulaghiri, fantastic 8000 meters very impressive! Then, we went back down to the camp, for a cold night in the tent, warm in our altitude sleeping bags. And then it was the return, to Yara and the slow descent to Charang, Shyamboche, Chusang and finally Muktinath, holy city, exit door of Mustang and return route from the Annapurna trek. After Mukthinath, we found the flow of trekkers and the bustle of the world, but we will keep the memories of these Hindu pilgrims who bathed in the freezing water of the glaciers, almost naked, in the morning around 7 am! incredible vision! then it was the return to Jomson, for the last step before the morning flight to Pokkara. We will keep the memory of the flight of large vultures above 5000 meters for a long time, the beauty of the preserved temples, the friendliness of the mustangi people and the fantastic landscapes of the lower and upper Mustang, as well as the spiritual strength of the pilgrims of Mukthinath! And finally, thank again the professionalism of the teams of HMT, Sitaram, Prakash, Shamboo and the boss Nabin Karki because without them, the trip would have been very different, they would be warmly thanked here, and, needless to say, the next trek will be with them, once again, for our greatest pleasure! thanks to them all!
