Mustang Trekking is a district in Dhaulagiri zone of western part of Nepal. It is an ancient forbidden kingdom, bordered by the Tibetan Plateau and sheltered by some of world's tallest peaks like Annapurna and Dhaulagiri. It covers an area of 3,573 km² and has a population of 13,452 according to the census of 2011. It is one of the remotest areas in Nepal. Its headquarters is Jomsom. It is one of the most preserved regions in the world due to its corresponding isolation from the outside world, with a majority of the population still speaking traditional Tibetan languages
The region has Mount Dhaulagiri the 8th highest mountain in the world and several other peaks above 7,000 meters. Some of the top tourist attractions in this region are Lo-manthang, Muktinath, the Mustangi royal palace, Tibetan art (e.g. frescoes, Thanka) and their culture, and trekking in the Annapurna Circuit. The district is also famous for the springs and village of Muktinath (a popular Hindu and Buddhist pilgrimage site), apples and Marpha brandy made from a variety of fruits like pear, apricot, and apple.
There are around 275 houses in Lo-Mangthang having four castes with one of them being royal. Mustang is the land of Barley field's pastures for grazing herd. Kaligandaki River valley has tantalized generations of Mustang trekkers. Journey of Mustang begins with a flight to Jomsom via Pokhara. Two days walking from Jomsom, we cross the traditional boundary into the wild lunar landscape of Mustang.
Mustang trekking is one of the most popular destinations for trekking in Nepal. Over a thousand western trekkers visit each year, with just over 2000 foreign tourists in 2008 whereas 39,017 tourists in 2016. The kingdom was closed to foreigners until 1992 in order to protect the custom and culture of ancient Tibet. At present, annual quota for travelers is limited up to 1,000 people. Lo is strictly restricted and hard to access. Nepal government has introduced a surcharge for anyone trekking preceding Kagbeni (border of Upper Mustang). Foreign tourists are required by the Nepalese Department of Immigration to acquire special permits and accompanied by a license (guide) to protect the local tradition and environment of Mustang from outside influence. August and October are the peak visiting months
