Makalu (8,481m) was first climbed by a French people in 1955. While based on 1995 report; 160 climbers had reached the summit on 125 expeditions whereas 15 climbers had died in this strive. Firstly, it was mapped and photographed from the Tibet side in 1921 by British Everest reconnaissance.  Hillary and Shipton were arrived after a year later failure of their Cho Oyu Expedition. In 1954 Makalu was first attempted by a US team and most of them from California. They walked all the way from the Nepal towards the Indian border near to Biratnagar.

At the same time a British team came near to the mountain but it was abandoned by Hillary because he became seriously ill and had to be evacuated.  In the autumn of 1954 a French team attempted the peak, interestingly during the spring season; three teams of French climbers successfully ascended this summit on successive days.

In 1960 a huge scientific and mountaineers expedition wintered at the foot of Ama Dablam by engaging the Green and Silver huts. In 1961 May, members of the expedition walked across the Mingbo La and other high passes to the foot of Makalu. Whereas sickness stopped the expedition but it became a heroic struggle for the survival of the team. The Japanese climbers ascended Makalu in 1970, another French team in 1971 a Yugoslav expedition reached the summit in 1975, and Spanish and Czechoslovakian teams joined up near the summit.
