Annapurna Tilicho Lake Trek

We had an excellent trip with Himalayan Magic Treks (HMT) in December, organised by Nabin and led by Krishna. We chose HMT after emailing our travel dates and a rough plan to five trekking companies, and Nabin's response was the best - he'd put together an itinerary that perfectly matched the dates and places we wanted to see. We also found HMT and Nabin on the TAAN website showing HMT is a registered trekking company, which was reassuring.

We organised using email and it generally went well, the only issue was where $30 went missing when paying the deposit. Turns out if you are paying £GBP to Nepal (in $USD) the 'Agency' bank in America will take a large cut - something to be aware of if you are making a similar payment.

We were met at the airport and got to the hotel quickly and without fuss (airport wasn't quick but that's another story) and had a half-day tour with a very engaging guide. The next day we were on our way to the Annapurna ranges for a 15 day trek that took us from Besi Sahar to Tilicho Lal and over the Thorong La, down to Tatopani and over Poon Hill (an excellent itinerary, we drove the stint from Muktinath to Ghasa due to time constraints).

Krishna was an excellent guide, although not a 'cultural' guide (i.e. fluent in English and someone to talk you through everywhere you visit. This would cost more, ask if you are interested, we weren't aware beforehand this was an option). He arranged everything including accommodation, meals (always made sure we were fed promptly and even helped the chef!), and the route, meaning we had very little to do apart from enjoy the amazing scenery, absorb the culture and get some miles under the belt (from 5 - 8 hours normally, a couple of longer days) while our porter Nara ably took care of our luggage. Krishna was also very aware of safety and AMS; he walked with us when things got tricky and gave us space when we wanted to do our own thing.

We made a couple of suggestions about the route (e.g. avoiding the road) but found we did have to ask for it, otherwise we'd follow the path of least resistentce. Unless the request wasn’t possible, Krishna was more than happy to oblige, but we did have to be proactive.

The trek was during winter and we were very lucky with weather and a lack of snow (crossed Thorong La between Christmas and NYE), but it was very cold - intensely so at times. The sleeping bags provided were amazing. The lodges do vary in quality a lot at that time of year - frozen pipes mean no running water and no showers, but we could get a bucket of warm water to wash. Krishna used pre-determined tea houses, which were always of decent quality, but this meant that if they were struggling with winter or something was broken we couldn't look for somewhere better for that night; they were also often very quiet and we were the only people there, which is good and bad but it would have been nice to stay with more fellow trekkers (doubt this would be an issue in summer!). In saying that, we never got sick once, so the kitchen hygiene must have been excellent (plus we used drops for drinking water).

Some highlights - getting a local bus, as 'tourist' busses were hard to come by during the ongoing fuel problems; the locals were very friendly, curious and we loved giving our own plot lines to the Nepali films they played. Dal Bhat - could not get enough. It's what they cook for themselves, eat it! Scenery - Gangapurna glacier, the climb to Thorong La, Dhaulagiri+Annapurna+Machhapuchhre+Manaslu from Poon Hill, the Kali Gandaki gorge. World class views day after day...

Thanks Nabin, Krishna and Nara for an amazing trip!

Great time in Annapurna trekking!

I had a great time in Nepal, this trekking was incredible and memorable in my life, the guide Sitaram and porter Cheit was like my brothers, always helping me to keep walking, although I am a beginner tracker I felt supported all the time.
The local staff (Kathmandu) Nabin also was very friendly and ready to help, I highly recommend this agency.
