Tibet is an autonomous region of China, renowned for its awe-inspiring landscapes, including the towering peaks of the Himalayas and the majestic Mount Everest, known locally as Chomolungma or Sagarmatha. As the highest region on Earth, Tibet sits at an average elevation of 5,000 meters (16,000 feet) above sea level, earning its title as "The Roof of the World." The region spans vast plateaus and mountains and is bordered by the Chinese provinces of Qinghai to the northeast, Sichuan to the east, and the countries of India, Bhutan, and Nepal to the south. To the west, it shares a border with the Kashmir region, and to the northwest, it meets the Uygur Autonomous Region of Xinjiang. The border between China and Nepal extends for 1,414 kilometers (879 miles) along the mountain range and passes through the world’s highest peak, Mount Everest.
Tibet’s history is as fascinating and varied as its geography. It has long been the ancestral homeland of the Tibetan people, along with other ethnic groups such as the Qiang, Monpas, and Lhobas. Historically, Tibet formed a powerful empire in the 7th century, though this unity was short-lived, and the region soon fragmented into various territories. At different points in time, the central and western parts of Tibet were nominally united under Tibetan governments based in Lhasa or Shigatse, though these governments often existed under Mongol or Chinese over lordship. The eastern regions of Kham and Amdo, on the other hand, maintained a more decentralized political structure, with a number of smaller principalities and tribal groups. This area was also more directly influenced by Chinese rule and, over time, became incorporated into the Chinese provinces of Sichuan and Qinghai.
In the early 20th century, the fall of the Qing Dynasty in 1912 marked a significant turning point for Tibet. Qing soldiers were disarmed and expelled from the region, and Tibet declared its independence in 1913. The region enjoyed a degree of autonomy until 1951, when, following military conflict, Tibet was integrated into the People's Republic of China (PRC). The western and central parts of Tibet became the Tibet Autonomous Region, while the eastern areas were absorbed into Sichuan and Qinghai provinces. This political transition has led to ongoing tensions and dissent within Tibet, with many Tibetan groups actively advocating for greater political freedom and autonomy.
